'''What is the scenario about?'''
I will try to answer the most frequent questions when playing the scenario...

The historical background of the scenario is the American War of Independence at the end of the 18th century. Lead the American colonists through the struggle for freedom and independence or show the rest of the world that nobody should start making trouble with the British Empire and break down the revolution in the Thirteen Colonies.

Your primary target is to defeat your enemy, equal which side you are playing.
What are the goals of the scenario?

'''Do I need to know historical background to play this scenario?'''
This is an historical scenario with the background of the American War of Independence at the end of the 18th century. You may only play with the British Empire or with the Thirteen Colonies.

No, you don´t need it. I think you will have more fun if you actually don´t know what happened 250 years ago. It is a game which should make fun and should give you a chance to replay the history or create an alternative history. All events are going the correct historical timeline (it´s neccessary for a historical scenario) but should gives you also freedom to play your own game. It´s your choice how you defend your cities or attack enemy cities.
It´s your choice which side you will join. Choose the American Colonists and fight for freedom and independence or play with the British Empire and enforce the King's rules in the troublesome colonies. In case of need with the force of arms.

Equel which side you are choose, you have to defeat your enemy. That's your goal.

'''Are there any special things I should know?'''

Yes, there are some:
Will the scenario give me a historical background of the war?

''Governments:''
No, this should be too much work and (this is the most reason) I´m too lazy to write down the complete history of the Independence War. I´ve used the informations I need from Wikipedia. I´m sure there are also many good books available about this topic.

This is a game and should make you fun while playing it. The events are mostly going the historical timeline but I'm sure and hope that you can also go another way for winning this game.

Government switching is not allowed. The government of the Thirteen Colonies is Republic (Communism), the government of the British Empire is Monarchy (Republic).
Are there a technology tree available in this scenario?
The reason why I gave the Americans the Communism government is because they fought a war in their own country against an enemy. Even though not all Colonists supports the revolution the Americans never had any major problems with riots in their cities. I thought the Communism government should be represent this fact perfect.
To represent the Loyalists in the colonies there will be at random turns Loyalist uprisings throughout the colonies.

The British Empire got the Republic government to ensure some civil unrest in the occupied cities due to corruption and missing of social buildings like a Church, a Theater or a Town Hall.

Yes, I´ve included a small technology tree. At the start of the game you can only build a very few city improvements. Research new technologies for building new improvements in your cities. Later in game, depending how good you play, you can research new military technologies which allows you to build powerfull units in your cities. So it's your choice if you sell all Schools at the beginning of the game to get some more money and increasing research time or if you invest more money into the science for decreasing the research time.

''Civilizations:''

What units are buildable?

There are five civilizations (British Empire, Thirteen Colonies, Spanish Empire, France, Iroquois Confederacy) in the scenario. Playable are only the British Empire or the Thirteen Colonies.

You can have negotiantions with all civilizations except the British Empire or Thirteen Colonies, depending what playable Civilization you are playing with. The Iroquois Confederacy is allied with the British Empire.
Most of the units are not buildable, only a few ones.

You can declare war on all Civilizations but you can´t destroy them. I would recommend not to attack the other European Civilizations. You won´t get any benefits by conquering their cities.
Playing with the Thirteen Colonies:
At the start of the game you can only build Minutemen and Militias. This should represent the fact that the Colonists didn´t have an organized army at the start of the war. If you can hold Valley Forge until spring 1778 you will get the "Continental Army" technology which allows you to research the following technologies:

"Infantry Drill" (Continental Line)
"Cavalry Drill" (Continental Dragoons)
"Artillery Drill" (Continental Artillery)

''Improvements and technology tree:''
There are also some technologies available for researching a new regiment of special troops like the Stockbridge Mohicans or Lee's Legion.

You will see that you can´t build all improvements. It´s because I included a small technology tree into the game. You can ignore the research but you won´t be able to build the Continental troops (Infantry, Dragoons, Artillery) and maybe some important improvements or researching some special regiments later in game. So it´s your choice if you sell all Schools at the beginning of the game to get some money or if you invest it into research.
Playing with the British Empire:

At the start of the game you can only build Minutemen and Militias (when playing with the Americans) or Loyalists and Mounted Militias (when playing with the British Empire). This should represent the fact that the Americans didn´t have an organized army at the start of the revolution. The same goes for Britain, recruiting new troops in the occupied cities would be unrealistic.

If you are playing with the Americans you should hold Valley Forge unter winter 1777/1778. Historical Valley Forge was the winter headquarter for Washington and his troops. During the winter months the Prussian General von Steuben trained the troops and starts organizing the Continental Army. If you hold this winter camp you will get the Continental technology, which will allow you to research Infantry Drill (Continental Line), Cavalry Drill (Continental Dragoons) and Artillery Drill (Continental Artillery).
What do I have to do for enforcing or avoid France joining the war?

If you are playing with the British Empire you should conquer all naval cities. I think if Britain controlls all American seaports it would be difficult for the Americans to win the war. If you are controlling all seaports you will be able to produce Infantry, Dragoons and Artillery in all occupied cities.

When playing with Britain you can research Hessian and British Reinforcements. The King will raise up regiments which will be available in London. Build East Indiamen to transport them into the new world. Beware of American Privateers.
Thirteen Colonies:

To ensure French help you have to control at least 10 of the 12 important cities until fall 1778. The cities are:

''Special units:''
Boston, Saratoga, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Annapolis, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Norfolk, Wilmington and Georgetown.

In the game there will be special units available (i.e. Morgan's Rifles, Stockbridge Mohicans for the Americans)(i.e. Highlanders, 33rd Foot Infantry, Butler's Rangers for the British Empire). You cannot build them and they will be spawning only via events or if you research a special technology (the technology has the same name as the regiment)
British Empire:

''Colonists and Engineers:''
What about governemt switching?

Use them only for irrigate terrain or building roads. Don´t use them for building/rebuilding cities, please.
Government switching is not allowed. I´ve renamed the government names.

The government of the Thirteen Colonies is Republic (Communism)
The government of the British Empire is Monarchy (Republic)
The government of the Iroquois Confederacy is Chieftain (Fundamentalism)
The governments of the Spanish Empire and France are Monarchy (Monarchy)

''Spys and Iroquois Scouts:''

What about the nice looking units with the different flag icons?

Use them only for investigate enemy cities, please.

Those forces are special units and only available via event spawning or technology research.

This should answers all major questions of the scenario. If you still have more questions, please feel free to ask on the following thread on Civfanatics Scenario League:

AWI Title.jpg

1775, the British colonies in North America.

In response to the Tea Party and other protests, the British Parliament enacted the intolerable Acts to punish the colonies and declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion. General Thomas Gage, appointed governor of Massachusetts, was instructed by King George's government to enforce royal authority in the troublesome colony.

Even though the countryside is largely controlled by Patriot sympathizers, the Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith gets a secret order to capture and destroy military supplies that are reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord. Alarmed through a suprise raid of gunpowder and other military supplies near Boston by British troops thousands of American Patriots sprang into action and awaits the British regulars at Concord.

What units are buildable?

Most of the units are not buildable, only a few ones.

Playing with the Thirteen Colonies: At the start of the game you can only build Minutemen and Militias. This should represent the fact that the Colonists didn´t have an organized army at the start of the war. If you can hold Valley Forge until spring 1778 you will get the "Continental Army" technology which allows you to research the following technologies:

There are also some technologies available for researching a new regiment of special troops like the Stockbridge Mohicans or Lee's Legion.

Playing with the British Empire:

What do I have to do for enforcing or avoid France joining the war?

Thirteen Colonies:

To ensure French help you have to control at least 10 of the 12 important cities until fall 1778. The cities are:

Boston, Saratoga, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Annapolis, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Norfolk, Wilmington and Georgetown.

Recommended scenario files:

These are the recommended scenario files. Please create a folder called "AWI" in the "Original Game" folder. Copy the "American" folder into the "AWI" folder. It should look like this one now: ".../Original/AWI/American" File size: 900 kb

Media:American_Campaign.zip

Please note, this is not the final version. The events on the final version don´t work and I´m not sure how many time I need for fixing this. So I decided to upload my playtest version which should also makes fun to play.

The British campaign will be following. These files are the American campaign.

Additional graphic files:

I´ve changed many graphics for this scenario. The changes includes also many ingame graphics which are located in the Tiles.dll and mk.dll files. If you would like to use them I recommend you to make backups of the original files.

Copy the improvment graphics in your main scenario folder (i.e. .../Original/AWI/American). File size: 3,7 MB

Media:Improvements.zip

Copy the Tiles.dll and mk.dll files in your main ToT folder. Be sure to make backups of your original files before replacing them. File size: 3,6 MB

Media:DLL_Files.zip

Sound files will be following sometimes ;-)
