The Middle Ages is defined by the rise and dominance of Christianity in Europe lasting up to the Reformation. The earlier part of the period is often referred to as the Dark Age because of the constraints on scientific development imposed by the Church which magnified the chaos following the loss of administrators and engineers under Pax Romana. The Dark Age was followed by the High Middle Age, characterized by the recovery of Europe and the emergence of nobility and feudalism. Common scenario themes from this period include the Crusades, Byzantine Empire, Frankish Kingdoms, Rise of Islam, Hundred Years War and dynastic rule in the Far East.
